The French Revolution + Napoleon (Script)
The exam is based on the script (pages 11-28).
1. The Origins of the Revolution
You know what led to the Revolution. You know the long-term as well as the short-term causes of the Revolution. You know the structure of the French society at that time. You know the role of the Estates-General.
2. The Fall of the Ancien Régime
You know the National Assembly and what led to its proclamation. You know the significance of the storming of the Bastille. You know the significance of the August Decrees & „The Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen“. You know the French Constitution of 1791. You know the general situation in France at the end of 1791.
3. The End of the Monarchy
You know the political groups and what they stand for. You know the role the Sans-Culottes played. You know the National Convention. You know why the Republic was proclaimed and King Louis XVI was executed. You know why a new calendar and metric system was introduced.
4. The Radical Revolution
You know what caused the „Reign of Terror“. You know the role that the Sans-Culottes and Robespierre played in this development. You know the consequences that the „Reign of Terror“ had on the revolution.
5. Napoleon's Rise to Power
You know the Directory and can explain its course of action to restore power after the reign of terror. You can explain Napoleon's rise to power. You know Napoleon's motivation.
6. Emperor Napoleon
You know what Napoleon did to maintain his power. You know Napoleon's plan to conquer Europe and how (un)successful he was. You know the concept of the „Balance of Power“. You know about Napoleon's Russian Campaign and its consequences for both himself and France.
7. Aftermath & Legacy
You know the results of the peace conference in 1815. You know the legacy of the French Revolution.
