Individual Home Reading (IHR) 2

  • Please choose one of the books described in this (updated) PDF file and let me know which one you have chosen by filling in this online form.
    The deadline is set for Monday, 11 January 2016.
  • Please keep in mind that you cannot choose a book you have already read (in class or at home) and that I won't allow more than four students to read the same book (books from Individual Home Reading 1 included) - once again first come, first served!

Individual Home Reading (IHR) 1

When your name appears next to the book you have chosen you can go ahead and buy the book and start reading and taking notes. Bring the book to class on Monday, 19th October. There will be oral exams on the book you have chosen starting on 9th December 2015. See below for details:

Chinua Achebe: Things Fall Apart (Nigeria, 1958): Story about life in African society and the changes when the white people arrive. (Sebastian, Christina)

Aldous Huxley: Brave New World (UK, 1931): Life in a future world dominated by genetic engineering. (Samuel, Tobias, Florian)

J.D. Salinger: The Catcher in the Rye (USA, 1951): The story of a boy who runs away from boarding school only to find out that there is no escaping: not from school, not from life and ultimately not from growing up either. (Rahel, Lotte, Tabea)

Charlotte Brontë: Jane Eyre (UK, 1847): A young woman works as governess for a man, falls in love with him and discovers his secret. (NB: this book is almost 500 pages) (Vera, Nathalie)

T.C. Boyle: The Tortilla Curtain (USA, 1995): While an American couple enjoys a wealthy lifestyle, another couple is fighting to stay alive as illegal Mexican migrants. An accident brings their two worlds colliding together. (Michael, Leonie, Jan)

William Golding: Lord of the Flies (UK, 1954): A group of boys survives a plane crash on an island somewhere in the Pacific, no adult survives the crash, the boys are by themselves - and Golding shows what happens. (Romain, Nandor, Sandro, Kira)

Brian Moore: Lies of Silence (UK, 1990): The plot revolves around Michael Dillon, who is faced with a dilemma after being held hostage. The novel focuses on the personal effects of The Troubles, a period of ethnic, religious and political conflict in Northern Ireland. (Pablo, Remo, Salome, Daniel)
